(More customer reviews)First of all let me say I give the item itself 5 stars.But I don't like the way they package it.Basically this item will work with 3 brands of trimmers - Black and Decker, Weedeater, and Toro.But it is not just one item, there are 3 separate ones for each brand.They sell you all three in one package.It's a bargain if you have more than one trimmer, I guess, but not if you only have one.So that annoys me.They should sell you just the one you need and then it would cost less.You also wouldn't then have 2 attachments laying around you have no use for.
Anyway, that's the bad.Now the good!We have a Toro corded trimmer.I HATE using it.I am constantly checking to see if I still have line, constantly fearing that sound change that occurs when the line disappears inside the unit so you have to flip it and unscrew the spool and fight with it, constantly grinding the head to a pulp against the concrete in a futile attempt to bump more line out.I can never get the !#@$ thing to work right.My husband thinks I am just inadept at weed-whacking but I don't see him getting of his duff to do it so I just do the best I can.:-)There tends to be a lot of muttering and swearing involved.
I saw this at the hardware store when I went to buy new line for the trimmer.I figured I would give it a try.When I got it home I noticed that INSIDE the package it tells you not to use it for trimming against solid objects.I was a little ticked at that - what good is THAT?I'm thinking people trim against houses, fences, etc - that's the point of a trimmer.I would have returned it except I couldn't find the receipt.Since I was stuck with it, I figured I may as well try it out along the driveway and sidewalk and it worked GREAT.
There was more vibration using this than with Toro line.The instructions say this will happen if the line is loaded unevenly - there is one piece of line but it juts out on either side of the head.As far as I could see, I'd installed it as evenly as humanly possible.The vibration was a little unsettling but no harm came of it.This line is tough and I was able to quickly zip along my driveway and sidewalk.I think it was much faster than with the old Toro line, which only jutted out on one side.I then threw caution to the wind and trimmed along the front of my house and I had no problems.I still have to do my backyard where there is a wooden fence but I don't anticipate any problems.
All in all, I am happy.How happy you will be depends on how much you fear the bump and feed method, or how good you are at it.My husband initially thought this seemed wasteful - since you end up throwing away the remains of the line, rather than bumping out more and going on - as well as more time consuming, since you replace rather than feed.But I found myself with a lot of tangled line on the Toro spool at the end that I had to throw away, so really that was no less wasteful.This line is tougher (it's that twisted stuff that looks like a twizzler), so it lasts longer.And I found fighting to bump out more line way more time consuming that just changing a section and being done with it.In the end, my husband was amazed at how quickly I finished the yard.
This item is kind of pricey for what it really is - a plastic screw-on head with some holes - but not fearing the task of trimming is kind of priceless.A note - it is possible that the Toro trimmer just stinks.That could be the real source of my problem.But this was cheaper than buying a new trimmer and better than putting the trimmer in a landfill if there was a way around it, IMO.
Another note - you can buy pre-cut line to put in this thing, but the guy at the store said you can just buy the spools in bulk and cut it yourself.I plan to try that.However do not think you can just buy the tougher line and wind it up on a Toro spool.Maybe some people have had success with that but my neighbor tried it (he has the same trimmer) and let's just say that even I have never muttered so much while trimming.It got stuck and jammed a LOT.That's why I didn't just try using the twisty line on a spool, although it would have been cheaper.Your milage my vary.;-)
update - using this along my wooden fence went great...Also I have learned if you CREASE the line by folding it in half, and then exactly line up the little crease over the center holes when you install the line, there is much less vibration.This will make sense if you have the item.
